thank you's

We have collected a number of black pots from the Trader Joe's in Eagle Rock. We are using them as small buckets and planters. It's wonderful to know that our local businesses are so generous.

OSH in Pasadena has also donated a number of black flats which we will soon be using to start seeds for the Pizza Garden, Butterfly + Bird Garden, and Herb Garden.

Without these donations it would be difficult to accommodate all of the classes and children interested in participating in the garden.

sprouts grown by the kids

After only one weeks we had lots of happy little sprouts and kids. Our seed starting workshop yielded many new plants and beautiful plant markers designed + created by the pre K, kindergarden, Special Ed, 2nd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade classes. We had over 100 kids show up for our first classroom garden day. Lots of mommy volunteers helped oversee the plant marker creating, bulb + seed planting. All the children that participated received buttons proclaiming the wearer an official "Annandale Junior Gardener".

common grounds + master gardeners

I went through Master Gardener training in 1998 and was a volunteer for a number of years. Recently I reconnected with the group when I took on the oversight of the Annandale Garden. Many thanks to Yvonne Savio for welcoming me back and for helping us with seeds. Their site is listed in the sidebar and provides tons of useful information about community gardens, gardening tips, children's gardens and the Master Gardener program.

thanks burkard

Burkard in Pasadena is where I picked up our first round of plants. They were kind enough to give me a discount to help get us started.

Class meetings

Most of our garden moms showed up today along with 5 classes, from pre K to 5th grade. Thanks to seeds provided by the Master Gardeners, we were able to start seeds, create beautiful plant markers, and plant bulbs + wildflower mix.

The Annandale students came ready to work - digging, planting, and watering. Each child that participated was given an Annandale Junior Gardener button to be worn proudly whenever they work in the garden. Three of the garden beds have been planted now with additional plans for a sunflower house and pizza garden in the near future.

Thanks again to all of the wonderful moms that helped with weeding and workshops.

This past Wednesday we had our 2nd call for volunteers. I was so pleased that 8 Annandale moms showed up to help weed and help plant the lemon tree sapling and various flowers. The next meetings will be held Wednesday mornings 8:15 to 10:30am.

garden entrance

a fresh start

The garden currently has a few trees and I've started a couple of compost bins. There's so much potential for what the garden can become.
